We protect what matters

About Allter

Corrosion is silent. It weakens infrastructure, shortens asset life, increases risk, and drives billions in unnecessary replacement costs every year. At Allter, corrosion is a systems challenge — and systems require integrated solutions.

From Greenhard to ALLTER

Our journey started in 2013, when Greenhard was established as a private equity company focused on investments in industrial technologies and businesses. In 2018 the company took a new direction: rather than investing in individual technologies, we began building solutions around one fundamental principle — effective corrosion protection requires an integrated approach.

Surface preparation • Reinforcement • Cathodic protection • Coating • Testing • Education

An integrated approach to asset protection

“We look beyond the coating itself. We consider the complete protection system — from preparing the steel and controlling corrosion to reinforcing, protecting, inspecting and educating the people responsible for the asset.”

With decades of industry experience behind us, our ambition is straightforward: combine the right technologies into practical, safe and durable solutions that extend the life of critical steel assets.

The integration hub

A corrosion prevention platform

Allter is not a single-product company. It is a prevention platform. We unite specialized brands and technologies under one strategic focus: extending the lifecycle of pipelines and critical infrastructure.

Our story

Different backgrounds. One clear idea.

ALLTER was founded by Sander Hofstee and Frits Doddema, two entrepreneurs from the north-east of the Netherlands whose careers took very different routes before coming together in corrosion protection.

Sander started his working life with Leerling, a Dutch manufacturer of sandblasting equipment for surface preparation. From there, his career developed around surface preparation and protective technologies, including thermal spray aluminium, equipment development and patented technologies. He lived and worked in Bahrain, gained international experience in the offshore and industrial sectors and even spent time in the P1 powerboat racing industry. In 2008, he moved into visco-elastic corrosion protection.

Frits started from a very different place: cleaning offices, for the N.A.M. (Shell/Exxon) among others, and cleaning windows. After studying in Groningen and completing his master’s degree in business at Nijmegen University, he built an international career in industrial coatings and corrosion protection. In 2005, he entered the field of visco-elastic corrosion protection and subsequently spent many years developing international markets, applications and businesses in the corrosion-protection industry.

That early experience still influences how Frits looks at business today:

“I still see myself as a window cleaner. A clean surface gives you a clear view — and with a clear view, you can perform better.”

Over the years, Sander and Frits worked with asset owners, engineers, manufacturers, contractors and applicators around the world. Their experience spans surface preparation, protective coatings, visco-elastic technology, application equipment, manufacturing and the practical realities of protecting critical infrastructure.

Their connection to visco-elastic technology also reaches back to Frans Nooren and Nooren Afdichtingssystemen (Sealing Systems B.V.), whose pioneering work in watertight sealing systems in the Netherlands helped shape the technology and thinking that later developed into modern visco-elastic corrosion protection.

Together, Sander and Frits bring more than 50 years of combined experience in corrosion protection, surface preparation, coating technology and international industrial business.

Why ALLTER

There should be a better way to protect steel

ALLTER was created with a simple idea: there should be a better way to protect steel.

A way that requires less complicated surface preparation. A way that is safer and easier for the people applying it. A way that performs reliably in difficult environments. And a way that considers the complete life of an asset rather than only the moment a coating is applied.

That is why we call ourselves ALLTER.

We believe in alternative corrosion protection: challenging conventional methods where a simpler, safer or more durable solution is possible. We develop our products around the people who manufacture and apply them, the environments in which they are used and, ultimately, the assets they must protect for decades.

Less preparation. Easier application. Lasting protection.
That is the ALLTER way.

Frequently asked questions

ALLTER — frequently asked questions

What is ALLTER?

ALLTER is an asset protection company offering engineered solutions for the long-term protection of steel infrastructure. Our approach goes beyond coatings and combines surface preparation, reinforcement, cathodic protection, coating, testing and education into practical protection systems.

When did ALLTER start?

Our journey started in 2013, when Greenhard was established as a private equity company focused on investments in industrial technologies. In 2018 the company took a new direction and began building integrated corrosion protection solutions — the philosophy at the heart of ALLTER today. Our roots in visco-elastic technology go back further, to STOPAQ (1988), where both founders spent years developing and internationalizing pipeline corrosion protection.

What makes ALLTER different from a traditional coating manufacturer?

We look beyond the coating itself. Successful corrosion protection depends on the complete system: the condition and preparation of the substrate, application conditions, coating selection, compatibility with cathodic protection, inspection, testing and the competence of the applicator.

ALLTER brings these elements together in one integrated engineering approach.

What types of assets can ALLTER protect?

Our solutions are developed for critical steel assets in above-ground, below-ground, offshore and subsea environments. Applications include pipelines, field joints, valves, flanges, fittings, tanks, casings, risers, piles and other complex steel structures.

Does ALLTER offer solutions for wet or sweating pipelines?

Yes. Real-world application conditions are rarely perfect. ALLTER develops systems for challenging environments, including damp substrates, sweating pipelines and changing temperatures.

Rather than relying only on ideal laboratory conditions, we believe protection systems should be evaluated against the conditions in which they will actually be applied and used.

Does ALLTER offer subsea solutions?

Yes. ALLTER develops solutions for subsea maintenance, repair and corrosion protection, including applications that can be installed by divers. At our facilities, applications can be demonstrated and evaluated in a dedicated water environment before being taken into the field.

Can ALLTER provide solutions for operating or heated pipelines?

Depending on the application and operating conditions, yes. Temperature, substrate condition, existing coating, operating environment and required service life are considered when selecting the appropriate system. We can reproduce heated-pipe conditions during evaluation and application trials.

How does ALLTER approach surface preparation?

We believe surface preparation should be selected for the asset and application, rather than specifying one method for every situation. Depending on the project, this can include abrasive blasting, robotic blasting, power-tool surface preparation and other preparation technologies. The objective is to create the appropriate surface condition for the selected protection system.

Are ALLTER systems compatible with cathodic protection?

Cathodic protection and coating should be considered as parts of the same corrosion-control strategy. ALLTER evaluates coating systems with CP performance in mind and can perform cathodic disbondment testing as part of system qualification.

Does ALLTER test its coating systems?

Yes. Testing is part of our engineering process. Depending on the system and application, evaluation can include cathodic disbondment, impact resistance, holiday detection, adhesion and other relevant performance tests. Where applicable, systems can be evaluated against requirements and test methods referenced in standards such as the ISO 21809 series.

Does ALLTER comply with ISO 21809?

ALLTER develops and tests relevant pipeline coating systems with applicable requirements of the ISO 21809 series in mind. Compliance depends on the specific product, application and applicable part of the standard. We therefore prefer to define precisely which system, test method and acceptance criteria apply rather than making a generic compliance claim.

Can ALLTER help us qualify a coating system for a specific project?

Yes. This is an important part of our approach. Share the operating conditions, substrate, existing coating, temperatures, environment and project requirements with us. Our team can help define an appropriate system and establish a testing and qualification program before field application.

Can we test our own pipe or application at ALLTER?

Yes — and we encourage it. Customers can bring their own substrates, pipes, components or application challenges to ALLTER. Together, we can reproduce relevant conditions, apply the proposed system and evaluate its performance.

Bring us your corrosion problem. We will engineer the solution with you.

Can I visit ALLTER and see the solutions in practice?

Absolutely. We believe seeing is believing. Customers, engineers, asset owners, contractors and applicators are welcome to visit ALLTER and experience our solutions under practical and simulated field conditions.

Our facilities are designed to demonstrate, test and train across the complete corrosion-protection process: robotic surface preparation, subsea and diving applications, casing filling, heated pipes and sweating pipelines. We can also demonstrate and evaluate coating performance through cathodic disbondment, impact resistance and holiday detection testing, together with other testing required to assess systems against ISO 21809 requirements.

Come to ALLTER. Test it. Challenge it. See it perform.

Does ALLTER provide application training?

Yes. Even the best protection system depends on correct application. ALLTER provides hands-on training and education for contractors, applicators, inspectors and asset owners. Training can cover surface preparation, product application, inspection, repair and quality control.

Does ALLTER support contractors in the field?

Yes. Our involvement does not have to end when the product leaves our facility. For appropriate projects, ALLTER and its partners can support application trials, demonstrations, training, start-up and field implementation to help ensure the specified system is correctly applied.

Can ALLTER develop a solution for an unusual corrosion problem?

That is exactly the kind of challenge we like. Not every corrosion problem can be solved by selecting a standard product from a catalogue. ALLTER combines materials, engineering, testing and application experience to develop practical solutions for unusual geometries and demanding operating environments.

Why does ALLTER focus so strongly on application safety?

A coating should protect the asset without unnecessarily exposing the people manufacturing or applying it — or the surrounding environment — to avoidable risks. For ALLTER, product safety, user-friendliness and environmental responsibility are engineering criteria, not afterthoughts.

Where are ALLTER solutions available?

ALLTER works internationally through its own organization and a network of qualified partners and distributors. Contact us with your country and application, and we will connect you with the appropriate technical or commercial team.

How do I start a project with ALLTER?

Start with the problem — not the product. Tell us what you need to protect, where it is located, its operating conditions and the performance you need. Our team will help determine the most appropriate protection concept.

Challenge us with your application.
